Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse so she could continue her passion for theater and art in the daytime. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social conscience and advised DuVernay to express herself through art. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton and with her extended family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the iconic civil rights demonstration on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma inspired her to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish inside the home of one of the jury. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the business of public relations. DuVernay began her work as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio just after she had graduated from the college. In 1999, she established her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she launched several marketing and lifestyle websites, such as Urban Beauty Collective.
